Ethiopia Wants EVs to Become an Industry- Not Just Another Import
Ethiopia is pushing its electric-vehicle transition toward a bigger goal: building a domestic EV industry rather than simply importing more electric cars.
Speaking at the Nordic–Africa EV Summit in Addis Ababa, Transport and Logistics Minister Alemu Sime called for stronger local assembly, manufacturing, engineering and software capabilities.
He also highlighted battery recycling, compatible charging systems and local supply chains as areas that need investment.
The government’s message is that Africa should participate in the entire EV value chain while creating skilled jobs and attracting investment.
For Ethiopia’s automotive sector, that could mean the next stage of the EV transition increasingly focuses on what can be assembled, serviced and eventually produced locally.
