Ethiopia is looking to bring electric trucks to the Addis Ababa–Djibouti trade corridor as part of its transition toward cleaner transport.
TradeMark Africa's Ethiopia Country Director, Ewnetu Taye, says the country's growing hydropower capacity could help reduce dependence on imported diesel and lower freight transportation costs.
The initiative focuses on introducing electric trucks along major trade routes, where fuel expenses can significantly affect the cost of moving goods.
However, expanding charging infrastructure, improving road facilities and developing local technical expertise will be essential to making electric freight transport practical. If implemented successfully, the shift could help Ethiopia reduce logistics costs while strengthening its position in regional trade.
