Ethiopia’s electric-vehicle transition is beginning to move beyond simply putting more EVs on the road. Ethiopian mobility startup Orbix Technologies launched a platform today aimed at connecting EV charging, smart parking and other mobility services, with a long-term target of integrating 500,000 EVs. The company also wants its network to eventually connect more than 2,000 charging stations nationwide. Rather than building chargers itself, Orbix plans to provide the digital layer connecting drivers, charging operators and other urban services. If it scales successfully, this could make owning and operating an EV in Ethiopia considerably more convenient—and signals that the next competition in the country’s auto market may be about the ecosystem around the car, not just the car itself.
